What is the unconscious, according to Freud?

According to Freud, the unconscious is the mental thoughts that people are not aware of. These thoughts influence how people act and think.

According to Freud, people also has a conscious which is the thoughts people are aware of. The unconscious however, dominates human behavior and contains all of the basic human instincts. This includes sexuality and aggression. Our conscious works hard to control the unconscious. Freud believes that the unconscious wanted immediate gratification and that it slips through in human personality. The unconscious often revealed itself when a person slips up in their behavior or in something they say.
