What is a Unit Identification Code?

A unit identification code is a code used to identify units in the U.S. Armed Forces. Each unit is assigned a unique six-digit code that is made up of a combination of letters and numbers.

Unit identification codes are assigned to active duty, reserve and National Guard military units. The first letter of the code designates the branch of the U.S. Department of Defense that the unit belongs to. The next three digits of the code provide information about the type of unit being described. The final two characters describe characteristics of the unit, including whether it is a parent company or battalion.
