What is urban permaculture?

Urban permaculture is a method that combines scientific knowledge and art to create agriculturally productive ecosystems that sustain and regenerate natural resources in an urban setting. The goal of permaculture is to create human settlements that meet humanity's basic needs by providing clean water, healthy food, shelter, community and energy.
Permaculture designers use principles found in nature to create stable ecosystems. They do so by arranging life forms in a way that maximizes the connections between elements. The result is an ecosystem that creates more energy than it consumes, builds its own topsoil, waters itself and produces food with minimal tilling and weeding.
