The first mode of transportation was walking. The oldest sandals in the archaeological record are 7,500 years old, but it is likely that protective footwear existed before then. Some time between 4,000 and 3,000 B.C., humans began to domesticate animals for use in transportation.
This was followed by the travois, or netting tied between two sticks that were dragged behind an animal. In 3.500 B.C., the wheel was invented, allowing humans to make carts that could be pulled by humans or attached to animals. Roads and transportation infrastructure were revolutionized by the Ancient Romans. The Ancient Egyptians were the first to build large ships for sailing and transporting goods.
