Burial benefits provided to veterans includes a grave site in a national cemetery, opening and closing of the grave, a grave marker, a burial flag, and perpetual care, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The same benefits are available to the spouse and dependants of a veteran.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also pays a burial allowance to eligible veterans, notes its website. The rules on paying the allowance changed in July 2014, making payout simpler and faster for dependants filing. Discharge papers are required for eligibility. The family is responsible for contracting the services of a funeral home and making arrangements for transportation to a national cemetery.
