How much oil does my car take?

How much oil a car requires is determined by the make and model of the car. There is also a difference between the amount of oil a car needs during a complete oil and filter change versus a regular oil change.
The owner's manual tells how much oil a car's engine holds. A little more than 3/4 of the amount stated in the manual is used to fill the engine. For example, the Chevy Prizm has a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. It has an oil capacity of 3.7 liters for an oil and filter change, meaning the car needs approximately 3.9 quarts of oil. For a regular oil change, the car's engine has an oil capacity of 3.5 liters, meaning it requires approximately 3.7 quarts of oil.
