Venice turpentine is a transparent, pale yellow, sticky liquid produced from the western larch tree. At room temperature, Venice turpentine is hardly usable, given its almost solid state. It is lightly heated in a water bath to liquefy it and make it easy to blend with oil, turpentine or both.
Venice turpentine is applied to the soles of tender-footed horses' hooves to harden them. In addition to this, it can be used for its antiseptic qualities. It is applied to poorly maintained hooves and other injuries. When Venice turpentine is mixed with oil, it gives paint a smooth, flat finish.
