Is there a waiting list for Section 8 housing?

Once an applicant and his family are determined eligible, they are placed on a waiting list. Once a spot opens up, the public housing authority contacts the applicant to issue him the housing voucher.
To obtain Section 8 housing benefits, the person should apply at his local public housing agency or local HUD office. The applicant needs to provide documentation that shows income, assets and family composition. Once the housing authority has confirmed the applicant's employer and financial institution and determines overall eligibility, the housing authority determines the amount of the housing assistance payment that the applicant is qualified to receive.
