How do you find wall studs?

Using an electronic stud finder is the simplest way to find wall studs. Wall studs can also be found by locating an electrical outlet or switch, because these are generally attached to the side of a stud. Studs are usually found on either side of a window and in corners.

After one wall stud is found, it is easy to locate other studs by measuring 16 or 24 inches in either direction, as this is standard spacing for them. Knocking on the wall can also help find studs. Hollow sounds generally mean there is no stud, whereas high sounds may indicate a stud is present.
