How do I water orange trees?

Orange trees suffer if they receive either too much water or too little. They must be planted in well-draining soil. To give them the right amount of water, you need a shovel and a hose.

1. Create watering rings

   Use a shovel to build watering rings about 8 inches high and 2 feet wider than the canopies of the orange trees. This keeps the water where it is needed.

2. Water the trees thoroughly

   The root systems should be soaked thoroughly with each watering. Depending on the size of the trees, give them 5 to 10 gallons of water each. Young trees need more water than mature ones. Give newly-planted trees water every 3 days. Once they are a few months old, water them every 5 days. When they reach 4 months, watering once or twice a week is sufficient. Check the moisture level with your finger. If the soil feels dry 3 to 4 inches down, it is time to water again.

3. Apply mulch

   A 2-inch layer of mulch around the trees helps prevent loss of moisture. Use wood chips, shredded leaves or pine needles for mulch.

4. Watch for signs of over-watering

   Orange trees can die if you give them too much water. Watch for signs of over-watering such as curling leaves, pale or yellowish leaves, feeble growth or split fruit. If you notice these indications, let up on the watering.
