What is wave energy?

According to Pelamis Wave Power, wave energy is energy transferred from wind forces to the waves of a body of water, such as the ocean. Wave energy should not be confused with tidal energy.
The transfer of energy from wind to the ocean results in ocean surface waves, which can travel for thousands of miles before reaching land. These waves can be more than 30 feet high.
Wave energy has great potential as a power source. Very little power is lost when a wave travels, meaning that the energy can be captured at almost any point that wave would travel. In addition, wave activity is easier to track, via satellite, than wind activity.
