What is the best way to water a Japanese Bloodgood maple?

When the Japanese Bloodgood sapling is first planted, it needs to be watered every week during the summer. This encourages the roots to grow deeply, which guards against the stress of heat and dry weather.
However, the gardener should not overwater the tree, as overwatering encourages root rot. Nor should the tree be planted in soil that does not drain well, such as clay.
When the tree is established, it should only be watered during hot weather and during times of drought. When the tree is watered, the top 4 inches of the soil need to be soaked, and then 3 inches of mulch should be applied to retain moisture. Mulch needs to be refreshed every year.
