Eating smaller servings of spicy foods can help people avoid gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. Large servings put pressure on the valve at the top of the stomach and cause stomach acids to escape into the esophagus.
Roasted or baked spicy foods are less likely to cause GERD than fried foods. Fatty foods stay in the stomach longer and increase the chance of acid reflux states WebMD.
To avoid getting GERD at night, it's best to eat spicy foods three hours before sleep. This gives the stomach enough time to digest the meal, notes WebMD. Sleeping on a bed that is higher at the head can stop stomach acids from rising up into the esophagus.
