There were more than 85 different types of trees found growing during a United States Department of Agriculture survey from 1998. Most Indiana forests are hardwood with deciduous leaves. Native evergreens include the Eastern red cedar, hemlock and white pine, while some native hardwoods are the hackberry, red maple and oaks. The common tulip tree (liriodendron tulipifera) is the state tree of Indiana.
