What is WebM?

WebM is an open Web media format that uses the VP8 video codec and Vorbis audio codec to allow users to play video content on the Web. WebM is sponsored by Google, but is open-sourced and plays in any media player or browser that supports WebM.
WebM carries a BSD license that lets users make changes to the source code without owing royalty fees or releasing the changes made. WebM uses HTML, HTTP and TCP/IP technology to allow users to implement it with minimal tuning. Google released WebM specifications on May 19, 2010, allowing users to make both software and hardware changes.
