Two of the most famous celebrities who battled AIDS were Freddie Mercury and Rock Hudson. Both men kept their diagnosis private until shortly before their deaths.

Rock Hudson, an actor famous for his on-screen romances with Doris Day, was the first high-profile celebrity to die from AIDS in 1985. Hudson speculated that he contracted the disease through a blood transfusion, highlighting the fact that AIDS could affect anyone at any time, transforming public opinion.

Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the band Queen, kept his illness private until a little over 24 hours before he died. Famous for his lack of interviews, Mercury denied that he had AIDS for several years.
