What is WEP?

WEP is a classification for a security protocol used for wireless networks. This protocol was first packaged in 1997 as part of the first version of the 802.11 wireless protocol. During its design, the WEP was intended to match the level of security of existing wired networks.

As of 2014, the WEP security protocol has been replaced by the WPA and WPA2. Some weaknesses of the WEP include easily breakable static network keys and active hacking attacks. As the WEP is still in use on wireless networks, all the computers in the connected network can be easily compromised if one computer is hacked.
