When were the Federal DOT regulations established?

The Department of Transportation was established on October 15, 1966 when it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Federal department began operations on April 1, 1967 with the goal of developing and coordinating policies to provide an efficient and economical national transportation system.

The Department of Transportation issued Executive Order 11357 that same year to consolidate the National Traffic Safety Agency and the National Highway Safety Agency into a single organization. The National Highway Safety Bureau set up a comprehensive safety program to include motor vehicles, their operators and the roads and highways on which they travel.
