What is a wheel lug nut torque chart used for?

A wheel lug nut torque chart indicates the proper amount of torque, or twisting force, to apply to the lugs nuts found on vehicle wheels. Mechanics need to apply proper torque when tightening lug nuts to ensure damage does not occur to the wheels.
Torque charts give values based on the make, model and year of the vehicle. Torque is measured in units of foot-pounds and varies from 75 to 200 foot-pounds.
When too little torque is applied, lugs nuts come loose once a car is driven. When too much torque is applied, the wheel base becomes compressed or the lug nut is stripped. Torque wrenches, which come with special gauges, are used for accurate application of torque.
