Crayfish are omnivorous, which means they feed on plant life and animals. These crustaceans are also known to be scavengers, so they will also eat dead animals.
Amphibian eggs, tadpoles, insect larvae, insects and plants are all common foods eaten by crayfish, according to Penn State University. If given the opportunity, these creatures will also eat small rodents or birds. The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that some crayfish will eat other crayfish, alive or dead.
Crayfish resemble lobsters, and they are very similar to lobsters except that crayfish live in fresh water. They tend to burrow into the beds of rivers and streams for protection, and they are often found under rocks.
