As of 2015, there is no inheritance tax on the property of decedents that lived in the state of Wisconsin. There are no estate taxes imposed either, though a federal estate tax is imposed on estates valued at $5,430,000 and higher in all states, according to about.com money experts.

Only six states currently collect inheritance taxes -Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Property passing to a surviving spouse, however, is exempt from taxation in each of these states.

As of 2015, estate taxes are collected at the federal level -regardless of the value of the estate- in Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia.
