Why do windmills turn clockwise in Ireland?
By Forinfos - 15/06/2025 - 0 comments
Windmills in Ireland turn clockwise only if they were designed to do so, which is true anywhere in the world. If designed to turn counter-clockwise, they do so as well. There is no truth to the rumor that all windmills in Ireland turn clockwise.
The direction which a windmill turns depends entirely on the shape of the blade and the preference of the owner/manufacturer. Many older, counter-clockwise windmills were simply made by right-handed builders. Newer windmills with a prop attached to a generator use single bolt or nut assembly and rotate clockwise to maintain a tight fit. The same rules also apply to windmills in Ireland as they do the rest of the world.
