A wisteria bonsai is a miniature tree form of one of the vigorous, low-growing wisteria vines that bears bright green foliage and fragrant purple flowers. While wild wisteria may reach heights of 30 feet or more, bonsai are trained to remain small enough for pots.
The specimens most commonly seen as bonsai are the Chinese and Japanese wisteria. Both species flower in late spring or summer and are followed by the appearance of bean-like seed pods. According to experts at Absolute Bonsai, for maximum blooms in the spring, pods should be removed as they appear to limit the strength expended in seed development.
