The first team to win an NCAA men's basketball championship was the University of Oregon. The Ducks earned a 13-point victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes in a game that took place on March 27, 1939.
This game, in which the University of Oregon scored 46 points and Ohio State scored 33, was played in Illinois on the campus of Northwestern University. Ohio State's Jimmy Hull was recognized as the game's Most Outstanding Player. At this point in NCAA history, there were only three playoff rounds for men's basketball, consisting of quarterfinals, semifinals and the final playoff.
