What are wood stove hearth pads?

Wood stove hearth pads are accessories used to protect the area surrounding the stove from the intense heat. They are usually placed beneath wood stoves to protect the floors or against the back of the stoves to protect walls behind them.

Wood stove hearth pads can be made with a concrete backer board foundation and a layer of heat-resistant material over it to raise the stove and distribute the heat. An example of a heat-resistant material is cinder block, whose holes allow air to pass under the stove for more efficient cooling. Other materials that can be used are firebricks, stones or tiles.
