Do woodpeckers migrate?

Most of the world's woodpeckers do not migrate, but they occasionally have irruptions and expand out into new territory. One of the few woodpecker species in the world that truly migrates is the Eurasian wryneck. In the northern areas of the Midwestern United States, the red-headed woodpecker migrates partially.

Woodpeckers survive the winter by eating insect larvae, which hibernate under tree bark. Some woodpecker species, such as the acorn woodpecker, stash food for future use. Woodpeckers and their relatives have also been known to consume tree sap. Woodpeckers are also known to visit feeders, especially those that supply berries and suet.
