As of 2011, Rifca Stanescu was the world's youngest grandmother at the age of 23. She gave birth to her daughter at the age of 12, and her daughter gave birth to Stanescu's grandson at the age of 11.
Rifca Stanescu is a Romani, also known as a Gypsy, living in a village in Romania. She claims that it is customary for Romani to have children at a young age. Stanescu is married to the man, Ionel, who originally impregnated her; Ionel is the namesake for her grandson, Ion. Among Romani, it is also common for arranged marriages to occur. Ion is already arranged in a marriage. Stanescu was in an arranged marriage when she was 2-years-old; however, she chose to elope with her current husband instead.
