What is a Khalsa?

A Khalsa is a follower of the Sikh religion that participated in a special sacred ceremony. The ceremony demonstrates spiritual evolution and that the person is ready to live in accordance with certain expectations. All Sikhs are expected to work toward the objective of becoming Khalsa.

The Khalsa must follow four mandatory restrictions. They cannot interrupt the natural growth of hair. They cannot eat animals that are slaughtered in the Muslim halal or Jewish kosher method. They cannot live with a person other than a spouse. They cannot use tobacco or hookah. They also must wear a special uniform that includes a wooden comb, iron bracelet, pair of drawers and a dagger or sword.
