A mixed number is written as a whole number, or integer, followed by a fraction. A mixed number can be converted to or from an improper fraction in which the numerator (top number of a fraction) is of greater value than the denominator (bottom number of a fraction).
Mixed numbers can be used to express any amount greater than one that is not a whole number. For example, the fraction 5/3 can be represented as the mixed number 1 2/3 because five thirds is equal to one and two thirds. Similarly, the fraction 91/2 can be represented as the mixed number 45 1/2.
