First published in 1875, and popularized by Billy Graham's crusades in the 1950s, the hymn "To God Be the Glory" was written by Fanny Crosby, a blind American missionary, with music by William Howard Doane. It is one of several songs authored by Crosby and set to music by Doane.
Many of Crosby's more than 8,000 hymns are still included in modern hymnals. Besides "To God Be the Glory," "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" and "Blessed Assurance" are two well-known examples. Doane, a leading industrialist, composed some works of his own but was most recognized for the pieces with Crosby.
