What is yard drainage?

A homeowner has a yard drainage problem if it rains and the water stands in the yard, forming large puddles that take days for the water to drain. Having a yard drainage system in place eliminates the standing water.
One type of yard drainage system is a French drain. This is essentially a trench filled with gravel with a drain pipe laid in it. The drain pipe is routed to a place such as the street sewer system or a bog. For gutter downspouts, a corrugated plastic tube is attached to the end of the downspouts. The tube is then directed to a suitable place for the water to drain into.
