The comic book character Batman debuted on March 30, 1939. The character was created by Bob Kane for National Comics, which later became DC Comics. Kane envisioned Batman as a rich man who fought crime because he was bored.
National Comics editor Vin Sullivan asked Kane, who drew gag comics, to come up with a new hero for the comic book company. The first story featuring Batman was titled "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate." Six months after the character debuted, Batman's origin story was published. In the following year, Batman was paired up with his sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder.
