The Battle of Red Cliffs took place during the latter years of the Han Dynasty in the winter months of 208 C.E. The battle was fought between the forces of the Han Prime Minister Cao Cao and the allied forces of Liu Bei and Sun Quan.
The result of the battle was a resounding loss to Cao Cao, causing his ongoing conquest of China to be stalled at the Yangtze river. The battle also marked the beginning of Liu Bei's rise as a force in the region as he gained control of Jing province in 209 C.E. The battle was depicted as one of the central events in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms written by Luo Guanzhong.
