California officially became a state of the United States of America on September 9th, 1850. It was the 31st state to be added to this country. The name California is derived from a fictional paradise said to be inhabited by the Black Amazons. Their ruler was Queen Calafia.
The state of California is located on the West Coast of the United States. It is surrounded by Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east. California is the third biggest in size at approximately 164,000 square miles, with Alaska and Texas being the two largest states. The capital city of California is Sacramento.
