Zeus's mother's name was Rhea. As a goddess, Rhea was known as Mater Megale, which means "the great mother." or Mater Theo, which means "mother of the Gods." Rhea was the wife of Cronus and the daughter of Gaia and Uranus.
In Greek mythology, Cronus and Rhea had six children: Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia and Poseidon. Cronus swallows the first five children to keep them from revolting against him. When Zeus is born, Rhea tricks Cronus into swallowing a rock, and has Zeus raised secretly on the Greek island of Crete. The adult Zeus returns to defeat Cronus and releases his siblings.
