Jimmy Walker served as mayor of New York from 1926 to 1932. Part of the corrupt Tammany Hall political machine, Walker became known as the people's mayor due to his carefree lifestyle and attitude toward governing, turning his back to the vices of New Yorkers. When the stock market crashed, Walker's behavior wasn't viewed so favorably anymore, so he stepped down and left for Europe. La Guardia filled the void that Walker left and took a harsh stance against corruption in the government and at large. His efforts saw a return of trust from New Yorkers and led to two re-elections.

Who is Vilma Martinez?

During the 1970s, Martínez was one of the leading voices to speak out for the civil rights of Hispanic immigrants. She served as a board director for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. While president and general counsel, Martínez helped to expand the Voting Rights Act to cover Mexican-Americans. In 2013, after the end of her term as ambassador, the Argentinean government awarded Martínez the Order of May, which is the highest honor for a foreign national.

Why was the Townsend act set in place?

Charles Townshend, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time, suggested and implemented the Townshend Act, according to Land of the Brave. Townshend developed the law to manage the British government finances. American colonists responded to the Townshend Act tax burdens with the famous cry, "No taxation without representation!" The colonists fiercely opposed the act, which led to the Boston Massacre in 1770, the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution.
