British industrialists developed water-powered cotton mills beginning with Cromford Mill in 1771, leading to a boom in the production of cotton cloth and thread. When Britain started producing vast amounts of cloth at low prices, cotton cloth and thread manufacturers in New England could not compete. The bulbs of DeMolyens and Starr sent electric current through filaments enclosed in vacuum-sealed glass cases. These filaments were not resistant enough to electricity, used too much power and lasted only minutes. Thomas Edison claimed he solved the incandescent problem in 1879, but his concept was flawed. In 1880, Edison and his team concluded that the filament must be more resistant, eventually discovering that carbonized bamboo lasts nearly 600 hours.

The famous "midnight message of Paul Revere" continues "And I on the opposite shore will be,\nReady to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm..." The idea that Revere yelled "The British are coming!" is also widely disputed. According to the History Channel's website, Revere would not have yelled anything because the mission was a secretive one. Moreover, American patriots regarded themselves as British so the phrase is unlikely to have actually been used, as it is historically inaccurate.
