How long did the Battle of Antietam last?

During the initial 4 hours of the battle, the Union and Confederate forces fought back and forth across a 30-acre cornfield that was owned by a farmer named David Miller. The skirmishes that ensued during the 17th and 18th of September at Antietam resulted in 12,401 Union casualties and 10,318 Confederate casualties, and it is known in history as America's bloodiest day. The battle ended in a draw on September 18, 1862, when General Robert E. Lee withdrew his forces across the Potomac River.
