Bullock carts consisted of a wooden cart attached to a pair of animals by a central yoke. As of 2014, bullock carts are still used in the northern regions of India. More elite members of society sometimes used horse chariots instead. Palanquins were also called palkis and were originally used to carry idols of gods to temples. Palkis were used by the noblemen and the rich. They consisted of a covered, boxlike structure with poles. Several men would carry a palki by resting the poles on their shoulders.
