In animals like rabbits, color is perceived by special cells in the eye that are able to absorb specific wavelengths of light and relay that information to the brain. Humans have three different sets of such cells, called cone cells. Human cone cells pick up shades of red, blue and yellow-green, respectively. Rabbits appear to have only have two different kinds of cones. They are able to pick up blue light and green light, but other colors are simply not absorbed, so they are perceived as gray.

Barley straw should be made constantly available to donkeys, as they like to eat small amounts of food frequently throughout the day. In the winter months, hay is supplemented in measured amounts as needed to offset the lack of grazing. One or two fruits or vegetables a day, including apples, stimulate the appetite and add variety to the diet.

The habitat of freshwater fish is must less salty than their bodies, causing water to enter their tissues from the surroundings by osmosis. Thus, they need only actively drink a small amount of water to live. Saltwater fish, on the other hand, have bodies that are much less salty than their surroundings. Water, then, tends to leach out of their bodies. They must actively drink more water to live. To rid themselves of the excess salt, they excrete it through special cells in their gills.
