Who is John Humphrey Noyes?

John Humphrey Noyes held many radical views, but the most controversial included support of both polygamy and "free love." He believed that any two consenting persons should be free to have relations and that any children born from these unions should be raised by the community. Noyes was arrested for adultery in 1847 and soon after formed the Oneida Community. In 1879, Noyes left the commune and moved to Canada to avoid statutory rape charges.
