The 1970 Bhola cyclone was the deadliest tropical cyclone of all time, claiming between 300,000 and 500,000 lives in the Ganges River Delta and causing approximately $490 million worth of damage in U.S. dollars. Its strength equaled that of a category 3 hurricane.
One of the most severely affected areas, Tazumuddin Upazila of the Bhola district in what is now south-central Bangladesh, lost approximately 45 percent of its population, in large part due to the storm surge that caused major flooding in the area. Pakistani radio announced that there were no survivors on 13 of the islands close to the major port city of Chittagong.
