The 1986 Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar was designed to recognize the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. The dedication took place on October 28, 1886.
The dedication for the Statue of Liberty was originally supposed to be on the centennial anniversary of the United States' founding as an independent country from England. By that time, only the torch and hand had been completed. The Statue of Liberty is the most recognized symbol of freedom in America. The coin depicts Lady Liberty on the front with Ellis Island in the background. The Statue was the landmark passed by immigrants when they first arrived to America. Ellis Island is where the immigrants were processed.
