What is 211?

In the United States, "211" can be dialed to access essential community services. As of 2014, the number can be used in many areas of the country, but there is not yet nationwide coverage.

211 services are generally managed by a local government. Where available, 211 may provide referrals to emergency food and shelter resources, rental assistance, utility assistance, health care programs, crisis intervention and drug and alcohol rehabilitation, among other services. In July 2000, the Federal Communications Commission reserved this dialing code nationwide for emergency community services because it is an easy number to remember. There are efforts to provide full national coverage.
