Johns Hopkins Medicine says that 2-D echocardiograms are used to observe the motion of the heart's structures in real time. In an echocardiogram, ultrasound is used to create a non-invasive image of the structure of the heart. A computer converts sound waves bounced, or echoed, off the heart into pictures.
Johns Hopkins Medicine says that there are several types of echocardiograms. The simplest is called M-mode, and it provides an image of the thickness of the heart walls and the size of the heart's various chambers. Doppler echocardiograms measure the flow of blood through the heart. 3-D echocardiograms create a detailed three-dimensional image of the moving heart.
