What is a 454 Chevy engine?

The 454 Chevy engine is a V8 engine made by General Motors that has 454 cubic inches of displacement, or 454 CID. The 454 is one of Chevy's Big Block V8s. In 1963, Chevy introduced the Big Block engines to power larger automobiles.
Chevrolet unveiled the first Big Block engine at the Daytona 500 in 1963. It was a 427 CID engine that achieved speeds greater than 160 mph. Chevy introduced the 454 in 1970, placing it in the Chevelle, Camaro and Corvette. The 1970 Corvette 454 had 460 horsepower. Other versions of the Big Block had CIDs of 396, 400 and 402.
