Form I-485 is used to apply for green card status through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the department explains. The form is filed to adjust an individual's status to become a permanent resident of the United States.
When submitting Form I-485, other documentation and proof that an applicant is eligible for a green card is necessary, states AllLaw. These documents include Form 1-130 and a marriage certificate if the applicant married a U.S. citizen, the applicant's visa petition approval notice and marriage certificate if the applicant entered the United States as a fiancé, the applicant's birth certificate and various other forms for special circumstances.
