According to WebMD, ovarian cysts are not typically surgically removed until they are at least 7.6 centimeters. Therefore, a 4 centimeter cyst is less than half the size of a large cyst that requires removal.
The Mayo Clinic explains that doctors prefer to use other methods of removal if cysts are too small to call for surgery. If cysts cause no symptoms, doctors often recommend observing them over time to see if they disappear without medical intervention. In these cases, regular pelvic ultrasounds are used to monitor changes. In other cases, doctors prescribe birth control pills to prevent new cysts from developing. Birth control pills also reduce the possibility of ovarian cancer developing
