What is "5 A Day"?

"5 A Day" is a nutrition program adopted by a number of world governments. The purpose is to encourage citizens to eat at least five portions of fruits and vegetables each day.
The program stems from World Health Organization policy, which recommends that at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables (excluding starchy tubers, such as potatoes) be consumed each day as part of a regular diet. Countries that have formally adopted this program include Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom. The United States formerly had a version of this program but has replaced it with a new campaign. Australia has a similar program called "Go For 2 & 5."
