What is the 7th Amendment?

The Seventh Amendment to the United States Constitution establishes the right to jury trials in federal civil cases involving claims of more than $20. It also forbids judges from overruling findings of fact in any jury trial.

The Seventh Amendment, unlike the other parts of the Bill of Rights, has never been applied to the states by federal courts under the incorporation doctrine. States are not required by law to provide jury trials in civil cases, although many voluntarily do so. The 1812 Supreme Court case United States v. Wonson established that the Amendment relies on English common law to determine whether a jury is required for civil suits.
